If you’ve heard about large-scale high-quality bar-b-q’s for Israeli Defense Forces soldiers during the Iron Swords War, there’s a good chance that the Grilling for Israel nonprofit was behind it. Founded by Elliot Auerbacher, Grilling for Israel has made a remarkable impact. This nonprofit, which initially worked in collaboration with Bar Ilan Israel Experience, took off in October 2023. While it had been in operation for three years, the turning point came in the wake of the war. Here’s a glimpse into the inspiring story of Grilling for Israel.
From Humble Beginnings to Rapid Growth
Grilling for Israel began its journey three years ago with a quiet, almost imperceptible set of circumstances. A woman from Modiin was distraught. Her son, an active duty IDF soldier serving with an Iron Dome battery, was working day in and day out to intercept terrorist rockets and prevent them from harming Israeli civilians. But, unfortunately, he didn’t have enough food to eat. He would call his mother, asking if she could bring him a sandwich. A group of volunteers, who couldn’t stomach the idea of a soldier going hungry, mobilized. They arranged a first class BBQ for the Iron Dome unit. A new initiative was born.
The group of volunteers heard about similar needs, and continued to hold sporadic events once a month. But it was another call that came through that became an eye-opening pivotal point for the group. Following a tragic incident where a soldier took his own life, the group – already functioning as an organization – was invited to raise the morale of the soldier’s comrades. Grilling for Israel, initially seen as a kind gesture to provide tasty meals, soon transformed into a meaningful purpose-driven commitment to convey to soldiers that they are appreciated and that they are not alone.
What started with monthly BBQs became weekly. Then twice a week. In the first three years of its operations, Grilling for Israel organized 126 events and served an impressive 11,000 meals. But it was after October 7, when the organization truly found its stride. In just two months, they have provided an astounding 87,000 meals, demonstrating the incredible need of this initiative, the growth of the volunteer base, and the commitment of generous donors.
Community Support and Impact
Grilling for Israel’s growth wasn’t solely measured in numbers of meals. It was a testament to the power of community support and a shared commitment to making a positive impact. As the organization expanded, so did the number of volunteers, growing from 85 to over 350. With their tireless dedication, they now host up to 15 BBQ events every week.
The organization’s operations also saw significant upgrades. From initially relying on volunteers’ vehicles, they now have two rented vans and a trailer, allowing them to conduct multiple BBQs simultaneously. While the majority of meals were distributed in the first three weeks of the war, they continued to adapt and provide support as needed.
A Personal Journey of Aliyah and Giving Back
Elliot Auerbacher, the founder of Grilling for Israel, made aliyah from Englewood New Jersey in 2015. Accompanied by his wife, twin daughters and the family dog, Elliot’s move to Israel was a deeply personal one. He joined his older daughter in Jerusalem, and they’ve since been joined by his father, who made aliyah at the age of 92.
Elliot’s background in catering served as the foundation for Grilling for Israel. Before the war, funding for the organization primarily came from friends and family. However, it was during the war that Grilling for Israel truly gained momentum. With up to 50 volunteers a day, the organization’s efforts became increasingly visible. Nearly 100% of their funding comes from the United States, where they have raised over 3.5 million NIS. They recently received recognition as a tax deductible 501c3 organization in the United States, and are now in the process of opening a registered nonprofit in Israel.
A Heartwarming Legacy
Grilling for Israel is about the connection and the emotion that arises from supporting those on the front lines. Volunteers and soldiers alike come together, sharing meals, music, and camaraderie. It’s an experience that changes those who participate, forging deep connections with individuals who risk their lives for the safety and well-being of the nation.
As the Iron Swords war continues, with soldiers posted all across Israel, Grilling for Israel has its work cut out for them. As Elliot explains. “We offer the soldiers meat with meat and a side of meat. We have great burgers, entrecote steak and lamb. We could serve more people if we went with hot dogs, but what we want is to do something really memorable and special. The look of appreciation on the faces of the soldiers is more than enough to impact us as volunteers”.

Kosher Status:
The Grilling for Israel organization was first established as a program titled Grilling for the IDF within the Bar Ilan Israel Experience organization in 2020. In late 2023, due to exponential growth during the Iron Swords War, the group established its own US based nonprofit organization to raise funds in support of their voluntary work. In compliance with IRS regulations, the organization expanded its work to include border-town evacuees so that it does not focus exclusively on Israeli soldiers. With the broader mandate, the group renamed itself Grilling for Israel.
